Can you put a price on your own music? My music to me is priceless, but I realise that to others it's not worth a penny.
I don't make music to make money though. It's deeper than that. I make music because I love the creative outlet it gives me. I get things off my mind, things that have potentially been lurking there for 30+ years now, and to me playing an instrument seems tribally therapeutic.
I like to share what I've created. I hope people enjoy it, and I don't expect any reward for it. So, I've been looking at the best ways for me to have it available for anybody to listen for free.
Bandcamp is great for this, and I've changed my settings to allow you to listen as many times as you like without any purchase necessary. I'll also over time set the price so that you can pay what you like, so it can be downloaded for free. I'll keep physical copies and newer material at a minimal cost until I've recouped some money… After that they'll be the same.
My next project is to upload lyric videos for my entire discography to YouTube I'm slowly making my way through them. They're improving as I go as well, so I'll perhaps revisit them every now and then to keep them all fresh. I see YouTube as being a great place to let people experience my music for free. Most people are familiar with the platform and it allows me to experiment with different ways to present the albums I’ve created throughout the years.
In March most of my music will no longer be on any other streaming platforms. I'm not happy with the way any of them operate, and I think this is the best move for me personally.
